about

This is the fourth album in the 'Here' series, which means that we are over a third of the way through the project.

This month has the first instance of rain in the project, which is possibly my absolute favourite sound. There is a scene in the beautiful film 'Notes on Blindness', which talks about how the sound of rain describes the shape of a place, something that always comes to mind when listening to the rain dripping off the trees behind our garden or battering the wooden fence.

This is also the last installment of 'Here' containing recordings made in the school summer holidays. There are several moments in this month's album where you can hear shouts and play from the children living nearby.

"During the COVID-19 lockdown, we all found ourselves restricted to a very small area. Whereas normally I would travel over 250 miles in a week, suddenly I remain within the same 50 square meters for the vast majority of my time. This is an audio record of that space.

Each day I have made a minute long recording in the same spot in my garden in Bristol. I have then layered each recording on top of the previous days, panning each day to a different point so as to mix the old days with the new.

The idea of layering came from the mole (mo-lay) sauce of chef Enrique Olvera. Each day, Olvera adds more ingredients to his mole sauce, gradually building more deep and complex flavours. Can I build a soundscape over the course of the year that is deep and rich but maintains clarity?"

This album follows on from 'Here #3', which can be found in the discography.
