about

This is the third album of the 'Here' project.

This month has featured a lot more activity than the first two, a combination of people rushing back to normal and the school holidays. The trains are now properly running (rather than just being moved around), and I managed to catch one in full flow on '86 days'.

We've also had some wildly contrasting weather. While there isn't much evidence of the ridiculous heat on here, '91 days' has one of my favourite sounds, rain water running off the trees that surround our garden immediately after a heavy downpour.

I feel that interesting things are starting to happen within the soundscape as a whole. In particular, I have noticed almost an echo of church bells emerging.

By the release of 'Here #4', there is a chance that I may be back to work, at least partially. It will be interesting to see how the increase in travelling and the range of travel for me affects this project and my focus on the soundscape this place.

Below is more about the project itself.

"During the COVID-19 lockdown, we all found ourselves restricted to a very small area. Whereas normally I would travel over 250 miles in a week, suddenly I remain within the same 50 square meters for the vast majority of my time. This is an audio record of that space.

Each day I have made a minute long recording in the same spot in my garden in Bristol. I have then layered each recording on top of the previous days, panning each day to a different point so as to mix the old days with the new.

The idea of layering came from the mole (mo-lay) sauce of chef Enrique Olvera. Each day, Olvera adds more ingredients to his mole sauce, gradually building more deep and complex flavours. Can I build a soundscape over the course of the year that is deep and rich but maintains clarity?"

This album follows on from 'Here #2', which can be found in the discography,
